Intensify efforts to realize the national strategy of self-sufficiency in agricultural products

CONSTANTINE- The Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hamid Bensaâd, emphasized Sunday in Constantine the need to intensify efforts to realize the national strategy aimed at achieving the objective of self-sufficiency in agricultural products.

In his opening speech to the 5th edition of the national seminar on the development of the cereals sector organized for two days at the “Mentouri brothers” university (Constantine 1), the same manager underlined that the establishment of a short-term national strategy to begin the realization of self-sufficiency in certain agricultural products and the objectives outlined by the President of the Republic, Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune will make it possible to “expand the irrigated areas to more than one million hectares and achieve self-sufficiency in durum wheat in 2025 and in corn and barley in 2026.

Efforts are combined through the introduction of modern technologies and the association of experts, professionals and the university as an incubator of innovative projects in agriculture, he added, noting that the realization of food security is one of the foundations of national sovereignty and constitutes a strategic objective for the agricultural sector through the increase in production and productivity of all agricultural sectors to meet the growing food needs of citizens and provide added value for the national economy.

“From the 2024-2025 agricultural season, the areas dedicated to the cultivation of corn, sunflowers and pulses will be increased,” he added, affirming that an area of ​​3.069 million hectares has been reserved for cereals including 1.043 million hectares for durum wheat and 1.031 hectares for barley with the mobilization for this of some 4.2 million quintals of seeds and 3.5 million quintals of fertilizers with a view to enabling farmers to begin plowing and sowing in complete ease.

The same official highlighted the support granted by the State to farmers through the supply of fertilizers, agricultural equipment and varieties of seeds adapted for each region.

The first day of this meeting, initiated by the National Chamber of Agriculture (CNA) in coordination with the Chamber of Agriculture and the Directorate of Agricultural Services (DSA) of the wilaya of Constantine, was marked by the presentation of several communications on a number of themes including “rethinking cereal crops to develop them” and “the impact of climate change on cereal farming in Algeria”.

A show dedicated to cereals bringing together 30 exhibitors organized on this occasion was also opened by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Hamid Bensaâd, the wali of Constantine, Abdelkhalek Sayouda, the president of the National Chamber of agriculture (CNA), Mohamed Yazid Hambli, a representative of the National Union of Algerian Peasants (UNPA), local officials and representatives of several companies in the sector.
