Some 31 people were arrested on the boat. However, three dived into the sea regarding 12 nautical miles off the northwest coast of Aguadilla.
To give you an idea, Castrodad stipulated that the island of Desecheo is located at the same distance from the one where the undocumented immigrants jumped into the sea.
“That is a considerable distance,” he said.
About 12 hours following the undocumented people jumped into the sea, the Coast Guard managed to rescue one of the three Dominicans they were looking for.
The rescue, which occurred 3.5 nautical miles from the coast, took place at around 7:06 pm, Castrodad said.
“At 8:15 pm, the second survivor had a phone and established communication with the (Emergency System) 9-1-1. The helicopter managed to locate the second survivor and rescue him, ”he noted.
This second survivor was the one who established that the third Dominican who jumped into the sea did not have a life jacket. Castrodad reported that he said he had lost track of this third person “four hours before being rescued.”
Even under this condition and that 24 hours have passed since it was thrown into the sea, Castrodad stipulated that a person is searched for alive.
“As we continue to search, we understand that he has a chance of survival. We search with the intention and hope that he is alive, ”she said.
He maintained that, given the distance it was thrown into the sea, it is predicted that it should still be in the sea.
The search area, he said, extends from Aguadilla to Isabela.
