The FIFA international window has come to an end and it is time for the return of the Professional League Cup. They will be days of intensity and constant activity, given that from this Wednesday, September 13 to Monday, the 25th of the current month, there will be games almost every day: 42 games in almost two weeks. To inaugurate date 4 of the local championship, Gimnasia defeated Vélez 2-1 in La Plata and Sarmiento will seek to continue its good momentum by facing Central Córdoba, in Junín.

GYMNASTICS 2 – VÉLEZ 1

Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, with the debut of Leonardo Madelón as coach, beat Vélez Sarsfield 2-1 in an important match in the definition of relegations, valid for the fourth date of Zone A of the League Cup Professional.

Braian Romero, 41 minutes into the first half, opened the scoring for the visit. The forward headed a cross sent by Claudio Aquino from the right and sent the ball to the upper right corner of Tomás Durso. He equalized for the local Cristian Tarragona at the 6th minute of the complement following a devastating header inside the six-yard box, and the Uruguayan Matías Abaldo, at the 14th minute, turned the score around, following an error in the Velez backfield.

In an even process during the first 45 minutes, Lobo tried to get Fortín into their area, but it was Liniers’ team that had the best chances. At 11, Aquino took a strong shot that went directly to Durso’s body. The Gimnasia goalkeeper sent the ball to the corner. Seconds later, Francisco Pizzini mightn’t fully grab the ball and sent it over the crossbar.

The local team responded with a shot from outside the area by Benjamín Domínguez and some attempts on the wings by Eric Ramírez, who might not win the personal duels. Vélez controlled the half of the field with Yeison Gordillo and Juan Ignacio Méndez and at the close came the first shout. A cross from Aquino found Romero’s head for the scorer to make it 1-0. The former River Plate player had the second in the 44th, but his shot went just wide.

In the second half, Gimnasia came out to devour Velez, eager to change the course of history. And he achieved it quickly with Tarragona’s header, following an assist with the head of Abaldo, who at 14 minutes made it 2-1, leaving Chila Gómez in the way to softly define the back of the net.

With a great display of character, those led by Madelón almost managed to extend the counterattack advantage following a shot by Ramírez that passed very close to the Veleza goal. He also had it with Franco Soldano, who had a turn that ended in the hands of Gómez. Gallego Méndez’s team showed a pale image in the second half and deserved the defeat in the Forest.

With this result, Gimnasia, which ended a streak of 10 games without victories, reached the line of Vélez, with 33 points in the general table that defines the second relegation (the other is by average table). Below both teams were Central Córdoba (32), Huracán (31) and Colón (31). Arsenal closes with 25, but would be losing the category for having the lowest average.

On the next matchday, the fifth, Vélez will host Arsenal at the José Amalfitani while Gimnasia will visit Huracán at the Tomás Adolfo Ducó.

SARMIENTO VS. CORDOBA CENTRAL

Sarmiento dreams of giving the surprise and getting into the quarterfinals (@fotobairesarg)

Sarmiento de Junín, off to a good start in the League Cup with two wins and a draw, will host Central Córdoba from Santiago del Estero, worried regarding relegation, in a match valid for Zone B within the framework of the start of the fourth date. The match is played at the Eva Perón stadium, is refereed by Darío Herrera from Neuquén and televised by TNT Sports.

With the arrival of Pablo Lavallén as coach, the Juninense team began the League Cup with positive signs: they beat Tigre (2-0) and Boca (1-0) and tied with Defensa y Justicia (1-1) in Florencio Varela, results alleviated his situation regarding the relegation that now does not appear complex.

Central Córdoba, with Omar De Felippe as coach (replaced Leonardo Madelón), lost two of the three games played so far, with Newell’s (2-0) and Godoy Cruz (1-0), but then beat Platense (3 -2), although he is still worried regarding the possibility of losing the category
