“Intense attacks” against a pastor in New Jersey

NEW JERSEY, United States (EFE).— Luis Agüero Esgaib, the evangelical pastor who blessed the Copa América at the tournament’s opening ceremony last Thursday, said he has been suffering “intense attacks” since then, so he will not speak to the media.

The unusual presence of Agüero Esgaib at the official opening of the continental tournament created a great stir, since FIFA, which has not yet commented on the matter, prohibits in its disciplinary code “messages of a political, ideological, religious or offensive nature.”

From the center of the field, next to the Copa America trophy and with a microphone in his hand, the Paraguayan evangelical pastor said: “God bless America. The message of Christ is still relevant today. He called us to peace, understanding and forgiveness. He also told us to ‘believe’, because for those who believe, everything is possible. And these words encourage us not to be discouraged, to believe big and believe that everything is possible. God bless all the nations of America, each team and each athlete, all the fans and leaders, and all the families of the continent. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen!”

Later, on his X account, he added: “What moved me the most was the “Amen!” that was shouted in the stadium with 72 thousand souls at the end of the blessing. It was broadcast in 190 countries. A message of peace, harmony and forgiveness. Many people were grateful for that time. But I understand that many did not like it.”

“I apologize to the media that are trying to interview me. I will not do so at the request of my family. The attacks are intense and any word spoken, no matter how conciliatory, will only generate more hatred. I am not ashamed of the gospel, it is the Power of God for salvation,” he posted.
