Intel’s new blockchain chip is 1,000 times more efficient than GPU

According to foreign media reports, Intel is investing in the research and development of blockchain chips, bringing together decades of research in ultra-low voltage circuits, cryptography and other fields, hoping to develop sustainable and the most energy-efficient computing technology on a large scale. Details will be announced at this year’s International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC), with a launch expected within this year.

Raja Koduri, senior vice president of Intel, said that it is developing a new chip for blockchain computing called “Blockchain Accelerator”. The performance per watt can be more than 1000 times higher than the existing mainstream GPU for SHA-256 mining. It is expected to become the fastest and most energy-efficient blockchain computing chip.

Officials say that the chip has gathered decades of research on ultra-low voltage circuits, cryptography and other fields. Details will be announced at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) held on February 23, and it is expected to be officially launched this year.

The environmental impact of cryptocurrency mining is clear, and someone in the United States has raised the issue in Congress, discussing how to address the rising energy consumption associated with mining crypto, and requiring bitcoin companies to disclose how much energy they consume. Intel’s new chips are expected to solve this problem.
