Written by Samah Labib Sunday, December 17, 2023 04:00 AM A recent report revealed that Intel The new Core Urtla laptop chips, originally codenamed “Meteor Lake,” are the first Intel processors to include an NPU, or neural processing unit, to speed up AI tasks, engadget reports.
The launch comes a week following AMD unveiled the new Ryzen 8040 processor, the second batch of chips to include NPUs. While Intel is trying to catch up with artificial intelligence, Core Urtla chips still look like a strong step forward, at least by the company’s standards.
Intel claims that the Core Urtla chips use up to 79% less power than the last generation AMD Ryzen 7840U while idle in Windows, and are up to 11% faster than AMD hardware for multi-threaded tasks, and Intel did not have the Ryzen 8040 chips. Coming to test it, but it will be interesting to see how they compare next year.
Efficiency is a key element of Core Urtla chips: they are built on the company’s new Intel 4 (7nm) process, and feature FOVEROS 3D packaging. According to Intel, this is also “the most efficient x86 processor for ultra-thin systems.”
There are improved P (performance) and E (efficiency) cores, as well as Intel Arc graphics, which are up to twice as fast as the last generation (and also deliver twice the performance per watt).
Intel says the Urtla 7 165H can run Baldur’s Gate 3 twice as fast as a Core i7 1370P at 1080p with medium graphics settings, and it can handle Resident Evil Village 95 percent faster than the older Intel chip.
