Intel stuffs its Gen15 Cores with L2 cache

2023-08-14 10:55:00

The P-cores of the Arrow Lake processors would have 3 MB of cache, which is 50% more than the Raptor Lake. If we go back to the days of Alder Lake, we had to make do with 1.25 MB of L2 cache per core.

You are certainly aware by now, if you are a stationary computer user, this end of the year 2023 does not look very exciting : AMD n’a first nothing planned on the Ryzen desktop side, while Intel will be satisfied with a Raptor Lake Refresh series bringing above all higher frequencies. On the other hand, 2024 promises to be more interesting, with the Ryzen 8000 Zen 5 and the Core Arrow Lake generation, which will involve an all-new LGA-1851 platform and new microarchitectures; this range, however, might mark the end of Hyper-Threading. Regarding the P-cores, it should offer an increased amount of L2 cache.

Arrow Lake processors, like Lunar Lake, would inherit Lion Cove P-cores and Skymont E-cores (some rely instead on Crestmont E-cores for Arrow Lake). According to the reliable Golden Pig Upgrade, the Arrow Lake silicon will offer a noticeable cache improvement over the Raptor series, with an extra 1MB per P-core: 2 MB per P-core, Intel would indeed increase to 3 MB, an increase of 50%.

A 140% increase over Alder Lake

The Raptor Lakes had already increased the amount of L2 cache per core compared to Alder Lake: it had increased from 1.25MB to 2MB. Within three years (late 2021 / late 2024), Intel would therefore be on the way to increasing the amount of L2 cache per P-core by 140%. If we go back even further, to the Sunny Cove architecture of the 10th generation Core Ice Lake, the Cypress Cove cores have only 512 KB of L2 cache.

For the moment, we do not know the amounts of L2 cache for E-cores or even L3 cache for the next generations of Core.
