A Intel has already been publishing specifications of the Thunderbolt 5 almost a year ago, but today the company officially revealed the new standard. With it, the promise is of a significant leap in connectivity and transfer speed, providing improved performance — especially for creators and gamers.

The big advantage of Thunderbolt 5 is the higher data transfer speed, which is up to 120Gbps3x higher compared to the 40Gbps offered by Thunderbolt 4. A small caveat, however, is that this speed is only achieved when using a dedicated transmission mode.

More precisely, Thunderbolt 5 offers four connections of up to 40Gbps each and, in a standard configuration, two of them are used in each direction, providing up to 80Gbps bidirectionally — twice the speed of Thunderbolt 4. However, if a scenario is detected where more bandwidth is needed, such as extremely high-resolution displays, Thunderbolt 5 can reconfigure connections to achieve transmission speeds of up to 120Gbps — as well as up to 40Gbps receive.

This specification enables support for all-new display configurations, including displays with a refresh rate of up to 540Hz(!), up to three 4K displays with refresh rates of up to 144Hz, as well as multiple 8K displays.

More than that, the improved connection speed also benefits the use of external drivers and GPUsCentral processing unitor central processing unit.”>1 that take advantage of Thunderbolt connections. In this sense, the USB data protocol now supports transfer speeds of up to 20Gbps, although the minimum requirement remains at 10Gbps. Furthermore, Thunderbolt 5 supports DisplayPort 2.1, USB4 v2.0 (80Gbps) and PCIe 4.0.

Another new feature of Thunderbolt 5 is the possibility of recharging devices at a power of up to 240W — against the 140W of the previous standard. As for the minimum power required to recharge accessories, it is 15W.

The first Thunderbolt 5-compatible computers and accessories are expected to be available starting in 2024.
