insurers call for urgent reform of the premium system

Throughout Belgium, bad weather this weekend caused flooding and destructive mudslides. With last year’s deadly floods, these phenomena, a consequence of climate change, are likely to multiply in the future and have already overwhelmed insurers with claims for compensation. taken by the throat, the sector therefore urgently calls for a plan allowing premiums to remain at an affordable price.

“Last year, for the first time, we, as a sector, exceeded the financial ceiling”, reveals to the Nieuwsblad Hein Lannoy, managing director of Assuralia, umbrella organization of insurers. “This ceiling is calculated on the basis of premium contributions and we have therefore exceeded our legal obligation”.

Already in negotiation for a long time with the federal government and the regional governments to develop a legislative framework, Assuralia sees in these new bad weather a new signal of urgency. “These floods should make all parties concerned – government, industry and policyholders – realize that something is urgently needed to prevent premiums from becoming too expensive,” concludes Hein Lannoy.
