The interim president and CEO has previously served as a technical advisor to management on systems maintenance, disaster recovery and remote control issues.
An attempt at a cover-up? Arrogant mood and inability to understand the people’s outrage over the crime in Tempe? Indifference to what will happen next, even now, in the Greek railways, following the 57 dead? Maybe all three together, because there is no other way to explain the placement as interim president and managing director of the OSE administration of Panagiotis Terezakis, a man who has been retired since 2016 and the Mitsotakis government brought him back as a technical advisor to the OSE and responsible for issues system maintenance, damage recovery and remote control. This was the occupation of Panagiotis Terezakis, to control the infrastructure of the Greek railways.
What was done, that is, following replacing the CEO of the OSE as one of those responsible for the loss of so many people in the Tempe train collision, was to put in his place the man who was responsible for the tragic situation of infrastructure of the OSE. The man who, according to the documents brought to light by “democracy”, was in charge of assisting the managing director (the one he replaced) in managing technical issues of infrastructure, signaling and remote control. It is questionable why this specific placement was made. Because Mr. Terezakis helped the previous president and CEO, Mr. Pateras, so that the infrastructure of the OSE is in the best possible condition?
The two trains at Tempe collided because the signaling and remote control systems were not working, leaving the responsibility of running trains at one of the most critical points on the railway network in the hands of an inexperienced station master.
For the operation of these systems, the retired STASY and new president and CEO of OSE had been hired as a consultant. What exactly is the Department of Transportation’s justification for placing one of those responsible for the tragic accident in Tempe? That he knows the environment in which he is called to offer? Mr. Panagiotis Terezakis, according to the documents brought to light by “democracy”, shares the responsibilities with the one he replaced.
Mr Gerapetritis, who has also taken over the portfolio of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, is exposed with this choice, not so much towards the opposition, which accuses him of a position aimed at covering up, but mainly towards the relatives of dead and to the citizens, who are outraged by the government’s actions.
Statements
Equally tragic is that following the collision, Mr. Terezakis also made statements regarding the safety barriers that should have worked, but did not, and said that since 2011 the system began to break down for various reasons, such as the gradual reduction of staff, the gradual reduction of funding but also the looting of the train lines. However, he did not explain what he did to fix all these problems.
