Its objective is to scientifically validate solutions that have a real application, disseminate knowledge in this field, and improve treatments for patients.

The Spanish clinic is a world pioneer in the development of research to increase pregnancy rates with Artificial Intelligence

16% of patients under 30 will benefit from AI

One in six people in the world suffers from infertility. More and more frequently we know examples of those who have to resort to fertility clinics in order to have a child. Faced with this social problem, medicine is making use of Artificial Intelligence technology whose advances already provide solutions to increase the chances of achieving pregnancy.

After a renowned research trajectory in the use of Artificial Intelligence, Instituto Bernabeu has just created the first international Unit specializing in AI applied to Reproductive Medicine. Its objective is to disseminate knowledge in this field and scientifically validate solutions that have real application and improve patient success rates.

The creation of this first unit represents a great advance for reproductive medicine, since it enhances the work of professionals and improves their clinical practice. The Unit is prepared to provide concrete and personalized solutions to patients, optimizing each treatment.

“This unit, a pioneer in the world, is the result of the successful work of our scientists in the field of AI in recent years. We are making very relevant progress to know each time better each of the three patients involved in a fertility treatment: the woman, the man and the embryo; and with AI we are able to significantly improve the possibility of having children”, explains the medical director of the IB Group, Dr. Rafael Bernabeu.

“We know that 20% of the patients who start an in vitro fertilization treatment with their own eggs will have a low response. Thanks to AI, the diagnosis and prognosis of these patients will improve remarkably”, highlights the medical co-director of the IB Group, Andrea Bernabeu. And this is just one of the many applications that the scientists and gynecologists at the Instituto Bernabeu are already working on.

16% of young patients will require AI

It is estimated that 16% of patients under 30 years of age can benefit from the application of AI. They are women who, a priori, should have enough ovules for their treatment but who, against prognosis, have a low response to stimulation. In this case, an Artificial Intelligence algorithm makes it possible to identify genetic variants that predispose to an inadequate ovarian response, which helps to advance diagnoses and personalize treatment with better results.

Multidisciplinary team

The specialized International Unit of AI applied to Reproductive Medicine has a multidisciplinary team that includes doctors specialized in reproductive medicine, embryologists and genetic experts, among others, which allows for a comprehensive approach to patient care.

Among the members of this new unit are specialists of great capacity and recognized prestige in different areas. The medical director of Instituto Bernabeu Mallorca, Dr. Jordi Suñol; the director of the Embryology Unit of the Instituto Bernabeu Group, Dr. Jorge Ten; the biochemist, director of the Congenital Defects Unit, Dr. José Antonio Ortiz; and the director of embryology at Instituto Bernabeu Madrid, Leyre Herrero.

The Instituto Bernabeu’s International AI Unit applied to Reproductive Medicine joins other specific treatment units of the Group, such as the Low Ovarian Response Unit, and the Implantation Failure and Repetitive Abortion Unit, among others.

International recognition

Instituto Bernabeu is already a reference center in AI. In addition, his career has achieved broad support from the scientific community, being selected this 2023 to offer two presentations in this field during the congress organized by the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE), the most important in the world, which is celebrated in Denmark at the end of June. In this edition, 2 of the 12 selected investigations present results on the application of AI in embryo selection and ovarian response.

The institution uses AI as a working tool in the selection of embryos grown in time-lapse incubators of the in vitro fertilization (IVF) laboratory. In this case, technology contributes to helping embryologists in the process of selecting the embryo with the best chances of implanting in the maternal uterus. In addition, it also combines machine learning and pharmacogenetics for the prediction of suboptimal ovarian responses. An artificial intelligence algorithm makes it possible to identify genetic variants that predispose to an inadequate ovarian response, which helps to advance diagnoses and personalize treatment. The team of researchers also continues advancing towards the full integration of these tools in the day-to-day of their clinics.
