Institute for Natural Health Protection Message from Birmingham: Your heart needs potassium!

2023-08-23 13:20:00

Dear friend, dear friend,

Birmingham is a well-known city in the UK. It is also a city in the United States, located in a southern state: Alabama.

In the 1960s, this is where the civil rights battle waged by black American citizens took place.

Martin Luther King was locked up in city jails for participating in a banned protest.

He was accused of not having acted “neither wisely nor at the right time.” (1)

From his cell he wrote the Letter from a Birmingham Jail in which he recalls the four main stages of a non-violent campaign(1) :

  • show by the facts that there is an injustice,
  • negotiate,
  • l’auto-purification,
  • and direct action.

But today I am not going to tell you more regarding the extraordinary mission of this extraordinary pastor.

It is certain, in any case, that he contributed to the influence of this city which, through its university, continues to have an influence on the world.

Of mice and Men…

An international team of researchers from this university has shown that the heart needs regular potassium intake(2).

In any case, they demonstrated it in laboratory mice…

They composed three groups of mice. The first group followed a low-potassium diet, the second group a high-potassium diet and the third group an in-between.

Mice fed a diet low in potassium had vascular disorders and stiffer arteries(2).

However, the flexibility of the arteries is one of the determining factors in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.(3).

The more flexible your arteries, the lower your risk of suffering a myocardial infarction.

The health benefits of potassium

These data came to confirm other studies showing that potassium is useful for the heart and the cardiac system.

We also know that this precious mineral:

  • is essential for the health of your kidneys,(4)
  • strengthens your muscles,(5)
  • improves the performance of your brain,(6)
  • helps regulate sugars in your body,(7)
  • regulates your blood pressure by its action on sodium.(6)
  • acts on your entire nervous system,(6)
  • keep your bones healthy.(6)

Your metabolism is one of the essential keys to your health!

This study adds to the body of data that shows how important metabolism is to health(8,9).

More and more doctors are convinced that if we dose the nutrient intake perfectly by means of an adapted diet, accompanied by targeted courses of food supplements, we can improve life expectancy and limit the risks associated with chronic diseases(10).

This is a credible line of work for the medicine of tomorrow.

On the other hand, only supplementation adapted to your needs is useful. Multivitamins wouldn’t do much.(10).

The good news is that these approaches are non-invasive.

The bad news is that these doctors are still too rare today and that, moreover, many food supplements are not of impeccable quality.

The banana, potassium champion!

Fortunately, diet remains a key aspect of metabolic health.

And sometimes, it is enough simply to consume the right foods in sufficient quantity and quality to have the right minerals.

And when it comes to potassium, the easiest way is to eat… bananas!

This prodigious fruit also brings you magnesium and the combination of the two is beneficial to the nervous system.(11).

It soothes your metabolism and acts on emotional balance. It is a natural stress reliever.

It is excellent for the brain and facilitates learning and memorization.

The potassium it gives you strengthens your heart system and regulates blood pressure.

And in addition to all this, the banana provides you with many fibers that facilitate your digestion.

On the other hand, it is a little sweet and your nutritionist may prefer that you eat it not too ripe…(12)

Many foods provide you with potassium

If the banana is not your favorite fruit, you will find potassium in grapes, apricots, blackcurrants or even citrus fruits.(6,13).

It is also present in avocado, sweet potato, yam or cassava.

You will find it in sprouted wheat seeds(13).

Some vegetables also give you some. This is the case with green beans, spinach and peas(13).

Legumes such as white beans or lentils are also recommended for potassium as well as meats and fish.(13).

Certain spices such as ginger, cumin and curry also give you some(13).

In short, it is a fairly widespread mineral, even if the two champions remain the banana and the avocado.(12,14) !

Naturally yours,
