By Simon Flückiger/February 28, 2024/14 Views Dear friend, dear friend,

The issue of histamine will be discussed in detail during Belly University.

This event will be held in Paris on June 8 and 9.

I organize it with Amin Gasmi, doctor of nutrition. I will be happy to see you there. All readers of my letter benefit from a 30% discount with the code AS30.

Histamine, a subject that we talk regarding more and more

During Stomach University, we will talk regarding many topics, starting with the prevention of disorders and diseases of the digestive system and how to support them.

You will also see that stomach health affects many other health topics such as immunity, allergies, mental health and metabolic health (diabetes, obesity, cancers).

Among the topics we will address at the Congress in Paris is the issue of histamine.

This subject will be covered by Dr Lucy Wetchoko, general practitioner, who has become a histamine expert.

But there are a certain number of debates around this natural molecule, which is also a biomarker used by therapists.

Not all debates are settled.

Today I suggest you understand better what we are talking regarding.

Histamine is essential for life

Histamine is a molecule naturally made by your body. It acts as a neurotransmitter (1,2,3).

Your body synthesizes it from an amino acid called histidine.

Histamine is a regulatory molecule.

It contributes to the proper functioning of the(3):

breathing, blood circulation, muscle contraction, fat digestion, regulation of body temperature. It also helps you sleep, produce stomach acid and plays an active role in immunity.

Cells that kill pathogenic intruders like mast cells contain histamine(3,4).

It is a constituent element of the human body.

A response to attacks

When it feels attacked, your body produces histamine to facilitate the destruction of intruders(3).

This can happen, for example, during a pollen allergy. Your body considers allergic stimuli as intruders(1,2).

Likewise, in cases of acute stress or extreme physical exertion, your body defends itself and produces more histamine.

For therapists, histamine production is therefore an indicator of an intense reaction of the body.

The interpretation of this phenomenon requires, however, a more detailed diagnosis.

A molecule that is itself regulated…

Although histamine is useful for your body, it should not be present in excess.

This is where the DAO or diamine oxidase enzyme comes in, which is found mainly in the small intestine as well as in the kidneys, liver, thymus and blood.

It helps break down histamine. Thanks to the DAO enzyme, your body avoids excess histamine when everything is going well.

Unfortunately, it can happen that the production of the DAO enzyme is insufficient.

This can be caused by certain medications, genetic factors, or inflammation of the intestine(5,6).

Patients suffering from liver imbalance, Crohn’s disease or celiac disease generally have a chronic deficiency of the DAO enzyme(3).

Alcohol, even in small doses, can also induce a DAO deficiency.

The right balance between histamine and DAO enzyme is essential for health.

Consequences of a DAO deficit

When the cause is temporary, such as taking alcohol or medication, the consequences are also temporary.

On the other hand, when the deficit is linked to a chronic inflammatory disease, the consequences tend to remain or recur constantly.

This can cause:

migraine, dry skin, allergies, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, attention disorders with or without hyperactivity (ADHD), digestive disorders: bloating, diarrhea, constipation. Deficiency of the DAO enzyme raises histamine levels and causes what doctors call histamine intolerance.

It’s not an allergy, but an intolerance. The body reacts negatively to excess histamine.

Foods to watch out for

If you become intolerant or sensitive to histamine, you may need to do without certain foods that are very high in it.

They saturate your body with a molecule that it has difficulty managing.

These foods are:

beer and red wine, old cheeses like Parmesan or Roquefort, fermented foods like sauerkraut, raw ham, and cold meats, chocolate, certain vegetables like spinach, pumpkin, eggplant, olives, tomatoes and beetroot, overripe fruit, avocados, dried fruit, canned fish, legumes, nuts and seeds, egg white, pork, lamb and game, spices like cinnamon, chili, paprika, ginger, pepper and curry, shellfish, soy sauce. These are often foods that are fermented.

This does not mean that all of these foods should be cut out.

But it is good to be vigilant and above all to test with your nutritionist to find out what suits you or not.

And if you don’t have one, come and meet those we have brought together for you on June 8 and 9 in Paris!

Naturally yours,

Augustine of Livois
