Commander (retd) Mehmood Ali, General Manager of Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works Limited, told Independent Urdu that ‘following the gate number 45 and 47 of Sukkur barrage was broken on June 20, the Irrigation Department contacted us and we contacted a national institution. As part of measures to save this important barrage, construction of new gates was immediately started.

“Our company had replaced six gates of Sukkur barrage last year, so we had experience in this work and we also had the drawings etc. Based on this, we started work on an emergency basis.

According to Commander (retd) Mahmood Ali, these steel gates are 23 feet high while the earlier gates were 21 feet high.

He said that Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro and Irrigation Secretary Zarif Khero took many steps to effectively deal with this emergency, which kept the barrage safe and also helped farmers across Sindh. Water supply was soon possible.

“We were given this responsibility, we completed it ahead of time because now every single day is very important because it is very important to complete it before the flood situation starts.”

Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro told Independent Urdu on June 21 that Gate No. 47 of Sukkur BarrageA collision with a heavy object such as a tree‘ was damaged, following which an emergency was imposed on the barrage and its bridge was closed for traffic.

He further said that another gate was also partially damaged.

Muhammad Riaz, manager of Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works, who supervised the installation of these gates on Sukkur barrage, told Independent Urdu that ‘We are working here 24 hours in different shifts so that the work can be completed on time. . These gates are being prepared in Karachi Shipyard in six different parts and brought to Sukkur Barrage, which will be fitted here.’

Rear Admiral Salman Ilyas, managing director of Karachi Shipyard and Engineering Works Limited, said in a conversation with Independent Urdu that “As a national institution, we worked on an emergency basis to save Pakistan’s assets like the Sukkur Barrage.” Our expert engineers and workers carried out this national cause with great zeal.

According to Salman Ilyas: ‘Also in 2022, six steel gates of Sukkur barrage were provided by our company, which are working successfully in a much better manner. Each gate weighs approximately 50 tonnes, which is cleared by various tests during manufacture and followingwards.

‘We follow very strict quality control, which is why a gate can last for 50 years if serviced on time.’

Sukkur Barrage is built on the Indus River near Sukkur, the third largest city of Sindh province. It is the first barrage to be built on the Indus River, the construction of which was started in 1923 during the British rule.

It took nine years to build and is intended for irrigation and flood protection.

At that time the barrage was named Lloyd Barrage following the then Governor of Bombay, George Ambrose Lloyd, which was later changed to Sukkur Barrage.

According to the records of the Irrigation Department, the Sukkur Barrage is the largest irrigation system in the world, which gives rise to seven major canals, four of which are Nara Canal, Rohri Canal, Khairpur Feeder East and Khairpur Feeder West on the left side of the barrage. While three canals from the right side include Dadu Canal, Rice Canal and Northwest Canal supplying water to Balochistan.
