After the craze for short formats, Instagram seems to be betting on longer durations for its own formats, in particular Reels, these vertical videos largely influenced by TikTok.
In the whirlwind of social media trends, a new evolution seems to be on the horizon. While short formats have dominated the digital landscape, a reflection on the length and depth of content is emerging.
Appreciation for longer stories, more detailed messages, is gaining in importance. With this in mind, Instagram, the favorite playground of influencers, seems to be ready to push the limits of the length of its formats, in particular the famous “Reels” which are largely inspired by the trend initiated by TikTok.
Once confined to a maximum of 3 minutes, these Reels will soon be getting a makeover, as observed by engineering expert Alessandro Paluzzi and confirmed by Instagram to TechCrunch. The outlook then widens to accommodate more substantial content, prompting the question of whether social networks might be re-evaluating their approach to the duration of the content they offer.
This new feature is currently in the test phase but might arrive in the coming months on the social network. With this addition, Instagram would align itself with its competitor TikTok, which since March 2022 has offered videos of up to 10 minutes.
