Instagram gets Silent Mode and more options for recommendations

O Instagram today gained several novelties to improve the use of the application, mainly in terms of productivity and recommendations.

Disclosed on Meta’s website and by Adam Mosseri, head of the social network, the new features include a Silent mode (Quiet Mode), multi-selection to tag posts as “I’m not interested” e hidden words in recommendations.

Starting with Silent Mode, it’s mainly important for those who can’t help but peek at the app whenever a notification pops up. The user will be able to stipulate specific times and moments to not receive any notification.

Then the profile’s activity status will change to let people know and anyone who sends a direct message during that time will receive an auto-reply letting them know they have the mode turned on.

Everyone can turn on Silent Mode, but teens will be reminded to turn it on once they reach a certain amount of time in the evening. It will initially be available to all users in the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, with other regions receiving the update at a later date.

Meta is also expanding the recommendations options. Users can now hide multiple types of content in the Explore tab at the same time with multiselect.

To do this, just tap and hold a post for a few seconds and some options will appear, including “Not interested”. Then, a banner and the option “Choose more” will appear — then just select the ones you want to hide and you will no longer see similar posts.

Finally, the app already lets you hide comments and direct messages that contain certain words, and now that will extend to hashtags and captions. So you can filter to avoid posts with some specific words. To configure, just go to the “Hidden words” section in the privacy settings.
