A Meta, formerly known as Facebook, this week announced the ability for Instagram users in Europe to partially disable features of the recommendation algorithm used by the social network. This technology is used to evaluate the habits of each account, indicating products and services that may please the owner of the profile.

According to Nick Clegg, president of global affairs at Meta, European users will be able to access features such as Reels, Stories and Search on Facebook and Instagram without seeing content ranked by the company’s recommendation algorithms.

“For example, on Facebook and Instagram, users will have the option to see Stories and Reels only from people they follow, sorted chronologically from newest to oldest,” explains Clegg.

The change was made to adapt Instagram to the new guidelines imposed by the Digital Services Act (DSA) of the European Unionlegislation that imposes new obligations on service providers to protect the data and privacy of European citizens, in addition to the duty to combat illegal content, misinformation and other social risks.

One of the DSA clauses defines that online platforms — a classification that includes networks such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Kwai, Threads, etc. — give users the option to opt out of personalized content recommendations. In this case, the advertisements displayed in the application will be generic and will no longer reflect the user’s interests.

In addition to Meta Inc, TikTok also communicated the implementation of changes to the application in order to comply with the new rules imposed by the EU. In the case of Instagram, the novelty is available in the application and can be used by people who want to increase their privacy by not sharing some data with the American giant.

According to the executive, this is just one of several changes that will be introduced to the social network in the coming days to adapt to the DSA. Apparently, the developer has more than a thousand employees working to adjust the application.
