According a new study published in Neurologypeople with insomnia are more likely to have a stroke.

Nine years of study

To reach this conclusion, the researchers formed a cohort of 31,000 people aged 61 on average. For nine years, the scientists then evaluated the frequency of potential insomnia among their recruits and the possible occurrence of stroke.

At the end of the study, the results showed that people who regularly had insomnia and difficulty falling asleep were 16% more likely to have a stroke during their lifetime. The researchers also indicated that comorbidities associated with sleep problems such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and depression were factors that reinforced this association between insomnia and stroke.

There are many therapies that can help people improve the quality of their sleep, so determining which sleep problems lead to an increased risk of stroke can allow earlier treatments for people who have difficulty sleeping and possibly reduce their stroke risk”explained in conclusion the author of the study Wendemi Sawadogo, of the Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond (USA).

How to overcome insomnia?

The underlying causes of insomnia can vary and include factors such as anxiety, stress, medications, certain illnesses, and aging.

Although insomnia is a serious problem, there are ways to effectively manage the symptoms. Implementing a strict sleep routine, reducing caffeine intake, and eating a balanced diet can help improve sleep quality, among other things. Regular exercise can also help regulate sleep.

What is a stroke?

A cerebrovascular accident is a serious pathology which means the sudden stoppage of blood circulation in a part of the brain.

In France, approximately 130,000 people suffer from stroke each year. With 40,000 deaths, it is the second leading cause of death among women and the third among men.
