Insights on the German Car Market: Decreasing Orders and Increasing Production Amidst Growth

2023-06-05 07:00:00

While the car market in Germany is growing once more, incoming orders from German manufacturers in May were down on the same month last year. 19 percent fewer orders were registered, as the Association of the Automotive Industry announced today. In the year to date it is 28 percent less. The order volume from abroad fell by three percent last month, and in the first five months of the year there were four percent fewer orders than in the same period of 2022.

On the other hand, production in the German plants in May was higher than in the same month of the previous year for the 13th time in a row. With 381,100 units, a quarter more cars were built in Germany than a year ago. A good 1.8 million passenger cars have been manufactured since the beginning of the year. This corresponds to an increase of 32 percent. However, the figures for the first five months are still 13 percent below the pre-crisis level.

Exports rose by 24 percent last month to 295,700 cars, and 33 percent more cars (1.4 million) have been delivered abroad since the beginning of the year than from January to May 2022. (aum)
