Insights from Economist Bruno Colmant: Inflation, Taxation, and the 2030 Crisis

2023-10-25 18:41:00

The economist Bruno Colmant was the guest of RTL Info Signatures this Wednesday, October 25. It was notably a question of inflation and taxation. Finally, he also returned to his latest book, “Belgium of Tomorrow”, in which he discusses the risks of a major ecological and societal crisis by 2030.

Several subjects were on the table during the intervention of the economist Bruno Colmant in the RTL Info Signatures this Wednesday, October 25. First, inflation. While the International Monetary Fund explains that Belgian inflation will pick up once more next year, a question arises: should you buy your heating oil as quickly as possible and quickly move to a fixed contract for gas and electricity? ‘electricity ?

For the economist, it is necessary to be forward-looking in order to avoid an unpleasant surprise. “I think it’s reassuring because we know that the peak of fossil fuels will be reached in the next 10 years. And therefore, structurally, the price of energy will increase. So I think it’s worth securing these supply prices now. (…) It is reassuring for a household not to suffer price volatility as was the case during the year 2022“, he explains.

Real estate, should you rush or wait?

Another subject discussed, interest rates. Given that these have increased, should we jump on houses for those wishing to buy? Or on the contrary, should we wait because they will decrease? “I believe that the monetary authorities made a big mistake by raising interest rates too quickly and too high. They now say that we have reached more or less the maximum. Perhaps in the next two years we will see rates fall slightly. But I believe that the interest rate on mortgage prices will almost remain stable in the coming quarters“, specifies the economist.

2030, crisis in sight?

Finally, Bruno Colmant spoke regarding the crisis predicted for 2030 which he talks regarding in his book. According to him : “When we project the curves of environments, energy transitions, but also public debt, we realize that 2028-2030 are years of Paroxysm. And that is why it is next year, during the elections, that we must address these challenges. Not in a light way, but in a deep way. Me and Olivier Mouton (co-author of the book, Editor’s note) we think this country needs major reforms. (…) There is a huge project and we are not approaching it in a lucid way, nor in a contemporary way“.
