“INSEE’s Latest Consumer Price Index for Reunion Island: April 2023 Inflation and Sectoral Analysis”

INSEE has just published the household consumer price index. Inflation is +0.7% in April 20213 and +3.3% over the past year. Find the full press release below:

PRESS RELEASE – INSEE – MAY 26, 20123

In April 2023, consumer prices rose by 0.7% in Reunion, following rising by 0.5% in March. The rise in prices in April concerns all consumer sectors. In services, prices rose more sharply than in March, while the rise in prices of manufactured products continued. Food and tobacco prices continue to rise but less markedly
than the previous month. Energy prices are on the rise once more very slightly, following falling in March.

Over one year, prices increased by 3.3% in Reunion, significantly less than in France (+5.9%).

Consumer prices increased by 0.7% in April 2023 in Reunion. The rise in prices affects all consumption sectors (Figure 1 and Figure 2).

Services prices rose more sharply in April (+0.6%) than in the two previous months (+0.3% in March and +0.4% in February). While prices rose further in transport services (+1.3%), still linked to air transport prices (+1.5%), these increases were much less pronounced than in March. On the other hand, the prices of other items increased in April while they were down or stable last month.
Thus, the prices of health services increased very slightly, by 0.1%, following five months of decline. As for the prices of rents and related services, they rose once more in April (+0.2%) following a stability in March. The same goes for other services (+0.8%), linked to the increase in the prices of insurance services. The rise in prices of manufactured products continued in April (+0.8%), driven by prices for clothing and footwear (+2.1%). The prices of health products increased more moderately (+0.3%), as well as those of
other manufactured goods (+0.5%).

In food, prices rose 1%, following rising 1.6% in March. The rise in fresh produce prices was less marked than the previous month (+1.5% once morest +2.4%). Excluding fresh products, food prices increased by 0.9% in April.

Energy prices increased very slightly in April (+0.1%), following falling in March (-0.9%). The price of gasoline increased slightly in April, while those of diesel, electricity and gas remained stable. Tobacco prices increased by 0.4% in April following +0.8% in March
