Insecurity in the East: More than 20,000 displaced people live in difficult conditions in Kanyabayonga

North Kivu, March 15, 2024 – At least 20,000 war displaced persons fleeing the atrocities of M23 terrorists in several villages of the Bwito chiefdom, in Rutshuru territory, who took refuge in the commune of Kanyabayonga, in Grand- Northern North Kivu. This statistic was delivered at the beginning of the current week by the displaced persons movement committee in Kanyabayonga, in Lubero.

According to the same sources, these displaced people spend the night under the stars at the mercy of bad weather. Still others live in classrooms in different schools located in this city.

Richard Paluku Muvunga, Deputy Proved of the EPST Kirumba sub-division, who made a tour at the beginning of the week, in the Kanyabayonga school circle, indicated that this situation has a negative impact on the smooth running of school activities.

Amani Shabani, one of the displaced people met in the courtyard of the Kanyabayonga commune, living in a small tarpaulin installed in a vehicle, fears a probable epidemic among the displaced people.

“Tomorrow, diarrhea will attack us here, there is no need to do, I have six little sons, my wife and my mother we spend the night in this little tarpaulin. We spent three days en route to get here. We want people of good will to come to our aid,” he regretted.

Other displaced people live in similar conditions at the local Catholic church. The latter also fear a probable epidemic because they are not able to even find clean water to drink.

The local chief Kishishe, also traveling to Kanyabayonga, who shares the same difficulties with his constituents, invites the authorities to act quickly.

“We fear epidemiological diseases that can attack the displaced. Moreover, there are some who are already affected by diarrhea. We call on the government and its partners to intervene quickly,” indicated chef Shamuko Gédéon, to dispatche.cd.

Clashes between M23 and FARDC continue on the ground. Some localities once more passed into the hands of these terrorists last week. The Congolese armed forces (FARDC) with its partners are still trying to repel these attackers.
