Alpine skiing » Marco Odermatt (25) is really insatiable. The Nidwalden easily won the super-G of the World Cup finals in Soldeu yesterday, celebrating his 12th victory of the winter. The winner of the World Cup – who was also already assured of the specialty globe – won with 0”29 ahead of the Austrian Marco Schwarz and 0”71 over the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. He won for the fourth consecutive time in super-G, thus equaling in history the legends that are Hermann Maier (AUT) and Aksel Lund Svindal (NOR).
Odermatt can thus always aim for the magic mark of 2000 points this season in the World Cup, a record held by Hermann Maier since the winter of 1999/2000. He now has 1942 before the giant of tomorrow, of which he will once once more be the huge favourite, he who has already won six this winter.
Very close to the record
A third place will be enough for him to overtake “Herminator”. It seems more than within reach, as the Nidwalden prodigy has finished on the podium in the last 16 giants… “It was very difficult with these high temperatures, but I let the skis go. After my average downhill result, I absolutely wanted to give the right answer. Fortunately, I succeeded,” Odermatt told SRF television.
“I have now really achieved everything I imagined before the start of the season. That’s why I’m going to celebrate tonight. Hermann Maier’s points record is secondary to me. It’s great if I manage to beat him on Saturday, but otherwise I won’t have to justify myself to anyone,” said the champion once more.
The other Swiss involved in this last super-G were more discreet. Only Justin Murisier, 10th at 1”12 and Gino Caviezel, 13th at 1”42, were able to climb into the top 15 and score points. Loïc Meillard (at 1”76), Livio Hiltbrand (at 1”98) and Stefan Rogentin (at 2”00) narrowly failed, making a group shot from 16th to 18th place. ats
