Letter to Italy’s Sports Minister Abodi

After the decision to examine alternatives in Italy: Tyrol ready to host some of the competitions. Focus on sustainable, fast and cross-border cooperation

The ice track in Innsbruck-Igls remains an option for hosting the luge, bobsleigh and skeleton competitions at the Olympic Games in Milan-Cortina in 2026. The Italian Chamber of Deputies has obliged the Italian government to examine alternatives to building a bobsleigh track in Cortina. Tyrol’s sports officer LHStv Georg Dornauer welcomes the Italian Parliament’s decision: “In the spirit of sustainable, expedient and cross-border cooperation, we are of course prepared to host some of the competitions,” said LHStv Dornauer.

Built in 1976 for the Winter Olympics, Austria’s only artificial ice bobsleigh track at the foot of the Patscherkofel offers, following the planned general renovation, optimal conditions for the upcoming competitions in 2026: “Should the Innsbruck-Igls infrastructure be needed if the new bobsleigh and toboggan run in Cortina does not make sense or cannot be realized in time, the Tyrolean state government is officially open to serious neighborly and friendly cooperation given the geographical proximity of the areas.

LHStv Dornauer is today sending an official letter to Andrea Abodi, the minister responsible for sport and youth in Italy. The deputy state governor also wants to visit him in Rome in the next few weeks. In the letter, LHStv Dornauer also emphasizes Tyrol’s willingness to cooperate in a neighborly and friendly manner and “to make a positive contribution to the realization of the 2026 Winter Olympics through our support – in the sense of sustainable, fast and cross-border cooperation.”
