attendorn The cardiologists at the Helios Klinik Attendorn have once once more expanded their range of treatments and are now using intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) to treat heavily calcified coronary stenoses. This innovative method uses ultrasonic waves to dissolve thick ring-shaped calcium deposits in the coronary vessel walls in a targeted manner without exerting strong radial shearing forces on the vessel wall from the inside, which might lead to the vessel tearing.
“The introduction of intravascular lithotripsy using shockwave technology is a milestone in the treatment of coronary heart disease,” explains Prof. Dr. Yilmaz, Chief Physician Cardiology. Calcium in the coronary vessel is the enemy of coronary angioplasty. If complications from coronary interventions have occurred in the past, this was often due to severe calcification, which significantly increases the risk.
“We can now dissolve calcium deposits on the vessel walls more effectively and gently, thereby improving the effectiveness of stents.” This allows us to treat patients at Helios Klinik Attendorn today who previously would have had to be referred to a heart center and often would have required open-heart bypass surgery.”
Prof. Yilmaz worked with the IVL before he worked in Attendorn and has learned to appreciate this new method for regarding three years. The first patient on whom Prof. Yilmaz used the method three years ago was a patient with in which he had placed a stent which, due to heavy calcification, had not fully unfolded despite high-pressure processing. Years later, by using this new technique, he was able to improve the result and effortlessly expand the stent to the required size.
Prof. Yilmaz emphasizes the advantages of the IVL: “By specifically breaking up the calcium deposits, we can optimize the use of stents and improve the long-term results. This innovative technology opens up completely new possibilities for us in the treatment of patients with sclerosing coronary artery disease.”
The Helios Klinik Attendorn has a state-of-the-art cardiac catheter laboratory that enables comprehensive diagnostics and interventional treatment of heart diseases. The laboratory offers cardiologists the opportunity to carry out precise interventions such as IVL using shockwave technology and to provide the patients with optimal care.
The introduction of this advanced treatment method underlines the continuous development of the Helios Klinik Attendorn in the field of cardiology. With the use of ultrasonic waves to dissolve calcium deposits and the comprehensive range of diagnostics and treatments in the heart catheter laboratory, the clinic offers its patients modern, state-of-the-art medical care.
Also clinic director Dr. Okzana Prajzel is convinced of the new acquisition: “By combining innovative technology and state-of-the-art infrastructure, the Helios Klinik Attendorn ensures that patients from our region with coronary heart disease receive comprehensive and effective care.”
