Innovative Styrian Museum Pavilion Takes New York by Storm

A piece of Styria has started its journey to the “Big Apple”: While the mobile pavilion of the Steiermark Show 2023 can be visited in the Herberstein Animal World until November 5th, a miniature pavilion is now on its way to New York. The mini version of the immersive museum space will be opened on November 13th by the Styrian LH and cultural advisor Christopher Drexler (ÖVP) together with a small delegation at the Austrian Cultural Forum Overseas.

The mobile pavilion is a freely accessible museum space and is intended as a kind of research station to test and present possible exhibition forms of the future. After a guest appearance in Vienna in the spring, the pavilion has been on display in Herberstein in recent months. The mini version is now on its way to the USA via diplomatic mail. It is intended to show that exhibitions can be presented regionally, nationally and internationally at the same time.

This is made possible because film content on the topics of art, climate change and space exploration is put together on a semicircular screen to create an immersive experience – supported by a special sound module. “I am pleased that this Styrian ambassador is now embarking on his journey and starting his international tour. The small pavilion will send a strong, powerful signal from Styria and carry a piece of our homeland to New York. We are also showing this in the USA, that the green heart of Austria simply stands for Styria in so many ways. In Austria and around the world,” said Drexler.

The further development of the mobile pavilion is an important step “to share our cultural content beyond the borders of Austria and reach a broad international audience,” said Marko Mele, scientific director of the Universalmuseum Joanneum. The miniature version will be on display in New York until the end of 2023.
