Drinking water when you suffer from neurodegenerative diseases is not obvious… With Jelly Drops, these people can now hydrate themselves by eating candy!
The Jelly Belly brand, behind Harry Potter Jelly Belly, or Jelly Bean, fruit-flavored candies, has just invented a new type of candy… Jelly Drops! The latter aims to allow people suffering from dementia or neurodegenerative diseases to continue to hydrate themselves other than with a glass of water. This product should allow them to hydrate themselves (unlike gelled water, which is sometimes not appreciated by patients), has already received the support of the Alzheimer Society. Indeed, people with dementia become dehydrated very easily and forget to drink regularly. When it is too hot in the summer, this still too often leads to hospitalization and sometimes even death. Jelly Drops are therefore a fun way to get these people to drink without requiring a glass of water.
A product inspired by the inventor’s grandmother
Jelly Drops come in a solid form and do not explode in your mouth. They melt slowly, hydrating whoever put it in their mouth. These candies are sugar-free, and contain 95% water and some natural flavors. The product is not sold in a bag, but with a tray, so that they can be placed and accessible. Jelly Drops were invented by Lewis Hornby, who watched his late grandmother for a long time and loved to eat candy? Accompanied by a team, he surrounded himself with dementia patients, but also with doctors and psychologists.
Research for these candies was largely supported by the Alzheimer’s Society as part of their Accelerator program. The association invested around 117,000 euros.
