Surgeries via the nasal passages now possible in Outaouais – TVA Gatineau
Amanda Moisan | November 1, 2023
A first in Outaouais in terms of operation. After announcing the possibility of performing surgeries with awake patients, the CISSSO announces that interventions via the nasal passages are now possible. Patients from Outaouais therefore no longer need to be transferred to large centers.
The first surgery via the nasal passages in Outaouais took place on June 10. An intervention now possible thanks to the arrival of Dr. Yang in the region.
It uses a nasal approach to reach the brain to treat health problems by avoiding opening a section of the patient’s skull. This also allows patients to recover more quickly. Among the pathologies treated by this means, there are notably nasal cancers or even cranial fractures which cause part of the brain to descend to the nose.
Patients previously had to be referred to large centers outside the Outaouais, given that expertise was mainly maintained in university centers.
The family will be able to be present for the patient’s convalescence during hospitalization. And, for post-operative follow-up, it is certainly much easier not to always have to go back and forth between the two regions.
-Dr Nathan Yang, oto-rhino-laryngologist
A team of nurses, respiratory therapists, anesthesiologists and technical assistants supports the surgeons. Eventually, the goal is to perform surgeries that are more representative of the needs of the population, particularly the treatment of pituitary tumors, which requires instruments that the CISSSO does not yet have.
