This interest has led organizations in the health sector to strengthen and diversify their care models, seeking to reach their different populations more and more efficiently, particularly those who, due to their general conditions, may be exposed to a higher level risky.
For example, this has been the experience of Compensar in the initiatives that it develops within its ecosystem of integral well-being, with the aim of providing a support that responds to the needs of its patients, from a 360 approach that links physical care, mental and emotional.
“It is regarding not only analyzing the disease as such, but also understanding the way in which it is perceived by the patient, as well as the way in which he lives with it and affects his life”assured Carlos Ardila, manager of the Compensar Osteomuscular Cohort.
The disease seen from another perspective
Compensar Salud has been a pioneer in implementing work in articulated networks, which, in the particular case of the Osteomuscular Care Program, aimed at patients with autoimmune diseases such as arthritis, allows, through integration with different IPS, to provide comprehensive care to their users, contemplating the different foci of this disease that affects around 150 thousand people in Colombia, mostly women between 50 and 60 years of age.
According to the manager of the Compensar Osteomuscular Cohort, an area focused on treating this type of condition, with this program it has been possible to offer alternatives for the patient to find well-being in each of the areas of his life.
“What we did was create a care route for the 7,800 people we have in this program, which allows us to care for them in a more comprehensive way, involving different specialists such as rheumatologists, therapy professionals, and other disciplines, thereby contributing to improving their quality of life”he added.
One of the main objectives of this initiative is to prevent disability due to lack of care or timely treatment, for which he added: “It is not only regarding the doctor and the medication, but we also address the psychosocial field, we have psychologists and social workers because we want to know how the disease behaves from the point of view of reducing pain, but also how it impacts on their well-being , and how that is reflected in the activities of daily life”.
In this way, and according to Ardila, networking becomes a commitment to innovation in health that helps to improve the quality of life of its users, among other things, thanks to the fact that the problem was addressed together and a route involving different knowledge and experiences.
“This program is not just limited to the rheumatology setting. If any of our users within the Osteomuscular Care Program refers to an affectation in an organ such as the eyes or the kidney, we make the link so that this patient can also be treated by another specialist, we help you manage that appointment without having to do paperwork additional”said.
The program, which has national coverage and was born during the pandemic, also reaches patients who are in remote areas of the country through the benefits provided by teleconsultation and thanks to the coordinated work with the health units located in the territories that link patients through a meticulous enrollment management.
The patient at the center of care
In accordance with its objective of providing well-being to its affiliates and thinking regarding the implications that the loss of a loved one can have for people’s lives, Compensar implemented the Cerca de Ti Pediatrico program in 2021, an initiative of comprehensive accompaniment to palliative care in which children and their families are accompanied by different services that have been integrated to provide specialized care and address physical, emotional and spiritual health.
This is an initiative that gains great relevance in light of the figures provided by the Colombian Observatory for Palliative Care, according to which, during 2021, 40 percent of the population of children who died in Bogotá required palliative care. Also those disclosed in 2020 by the Global Atlas of Palliative Care, noting that, in Latin America and the Caribbean, between 25,000 and 75,000 children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer required palliative care each year.
In the midst of this context, the Cerca de Ti Pediatrico program is configured as an innovative initiative that, through networking, provides children who require palliative care and their families, comprehensive support to cope in the best possible way. the moment they are going through, a strategy that last year received the NewPalex qualification of excellence from the New Health Foundation.
According to Lady Layton, manager of the Compensar Salud Multicohort, an area focused on fragile patients and those with health complexities, “It is a strategy developed jointly by a multidisciplinary team capable of helping to mitigate suffering so that children improve their quality of life until the last moment, a team that is made up of various specialties, including pediatrics, psychology, social work, spiritual guidance, nursing and other specialists that are required according to their needs”.
Continuing with the official, this accompaniment offers the possibility of being carried out on an outpatient basis, at home or at the hospital level, in order to adjust to the realities of the patient and his family. “It is a time that demands great physical and emotional wear and tear, in which children and their families need special support, which is why we provide active and total assistance, not only for the body but also for the mind and spirit, and that is made possible through a spiritual guide and a psychologist who seeks to relieve stress and the psychological burden that it entails”pointed out the expert.
Cerca de Ti Pediatric was born in 2021 and to date has more than 170 active children in the program. The link to the initiative is determined by the request made by the doctor or treating professional, who identifies the needs and actions to start the accompaniment, which according to Lady Layton makes a big difference. “When there is accompaniment, the grieving and acceptance process is different, there is a better understanding of that experience”he pointed.
Likewise, and due to the high emotional impact that this type of situation implies in the entire environment surrounding the minors, Cerca de Ti Pediatrico carries out an additional intervention that involves different professionals and activities from the Compensar well-being area. These are sessions aimed at caregivers, who can participate in yoga classes, grief workshops, physical activities and access to group gym classes, among others.
“Aware of the role that research, analysis, collaborative work and innovative ideas play in human development, at Compensar we continue to advance in the search for new solutions that, from different fields, contribute to the integral well-being of our users, for this reason we will continue betting on the creation of high-impact programs and initiatives in response to the challenges of the present and the needs of the future”concluded Lady Layton, manager of the Compensar Salud Multicohort.
