BEIJING, April 10, 2024 (Xinhua) – The cold propulsion system of Tianduo-2, a communications and navigation technology testing satellite, is working well, marking the first in-orbit use of a tank made with 3D printing technology in China, according to the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. .

The cold propulsion system recently provided high-precision control of the orbital position of the satellite while in lunar orbit, representing the first successful application of a small liquid ammonia cold-air propulsion system in the field of deep space exploration.

The storage tank is an important component in satellite propulsion systems. As a pressure element, the storage tank not only requires high forming precision and no leakage, but also good anti-wear performance, allowing fuel to be filled and deflated repeatedly.

The development team from the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation has mastered a number of key technologies to connect components inside the storage tank through 3D printing, greatly shortening the development cycle and effectively reducing the cost.

On March 20, China launched the tracking satellite “Xue Qiao-2” and the two satellites for testing communication and navigation technology, “Tiandu-1” and “Tiandu-2”.
