Ingolstadt/Munich (ots) On March 20, 2023, the “Innovation TV Talk: The E-Mobility Summit” took place at Charge Construct in Ingolstadt, which was organized by the startup matching platform and entrepreneur network THE GROW. Successful entrepreneurs in the field of sustainable energy and Hubert Aiwanger, Deputy Prime Minister and Economics Minister of Bavaria, exchanged their thoughts and visions on the drive technologies of the future, with a focus on hydrogen and today’s electromobility.

Charge Construct, founded by Adrian Zierer and Tim Schwenk in 2020, is a full-service provider for holistic charging solutions that supports companies in the implementation of charging infrastructure projects. As part of the talk, which is available in full on THE GROW’s website, the possibilities and limits of electric and hydrogen drives were discussed.

The EU has set ambitious goals to achieve the mobility turnaround, including the so-called ban on combustion engines from 2035. In order to make this turnaround possible, a significant expansion of the tank and charging infrastructure is required. Wulf Schlachter, a participant in the discussion, expressed doubts regarding a full switch to hydrogen for passenger cars, saying: “I find it difficult to imagine that we convert everything to hydrogen in passenger cars, there’s just the technology and we’re talking regarding the efficiency of the vehicle and we’re not talking regarding more than 5 years so far that we somehow get this 33% up to 95%.”

The participants also discussed the challenges of setting up charging stations, especially in urban areas. Adrian Zierer emphasized the urgency of securing locations for charging stations and criticized the delays in the approval process. For example, Charge Construct was commissioned to set up 200 charging stations in Frankfurt, but so far none of them have been realized. “In order to achieve the goal, the pace of construction must be accelerated sixfold,” says Zierer.

Clear criticism of the municipalities & network operators

The Innovation Talk highlighted the need for closer collaboration between governments, business and society to accelerate the transition to renewable energy and combat climate change. Participants criticized municipalities and network operators for their role in delays and a lack of coordination in the creation of charging infrastructure.

Hubert Aiwanger emphasized the need to include both hydrogen and electric drives in future mobility strategies: “I think it will be difficult to represent seven hundred and fifty thousand cars plus trucks plus the growing need for electricity in cities with the current energy supply network.”

It’s only possible if we manage it together

Wulf Schlachter, an expert in the field of renewable energy, was of the opinion that a combination of hydrogen and electric powertrains was the only way forward: “Combinations of both models, I think it’s the only way these days.” Zierer called for courage from politicians and spoke out in favor of greater standardization among network operators: “I wish politicians had the courage to tackle things that are easy to tackle or have major effects, such as the standardization of network operators, for example.”

Overall, the Innovation Talk emphasized the urgency of accelerating the expansion of the charging infrastructure in order to be able to achieve the EU’s ambitious goals in the area of mobility transition. The participants agreed that closer cooperation and a better coordinated approach by municipalities, network operators and companies is required to successfully master the challenges of the future.
