During this Sunday a group of demonstrators came to protest outside the San Miguel Women’s Prison, in the Metropolitan region, for the death of Mylena Cartes, an inmate who died at the Barros Luco Hospital following severe stomach pain.
Mylena Cartes, inmate of the San Miguel Prison, She passed away at 9:00 p.m. this Saturday the 29th following being transferred from the prison due to severe stomach pain.
Relatives and friends of Mylena pointed out that the symptoms would have presented them almost a week ago, for which they denounce negligence on the part of the Gendarmerie.
Milena Cartes, 50, was awaiting formalization for the crime of drug micro-trafficking, for which she spent nearly 11 months in preventive detention.
On Monday the 24th, Milena presented severe stomach pains and asked the Gendarmes for help to be taken to a care facility.
According to the family, the Gendarmerie refused, thus taking her to the infirmary, where they lowered the profile of her symptoms and gave her paracetamol.
One of Milena’s nieces spoke with the microphones of La Radio and expressed that the Gendarmerie denied her decent attention.
“We are not talking lies. Look, there she was asking for help and they didn’t attend to her and this was like three days before,” he said.
It was during this Saturday the 29th that she woke up unbalanced, so they lowered her to a solitary cell. The family said that Mylena was taken to a solitary cell where she was left throughout the day. At that time he would have suffered from diarrhea and dehydration. She is finally taken to the hospital, where she died.
His relatives accuse negligence on the part of the Gendarmerie and the prison nurse herself. A group of inmates through a telephone sent a statement recounting how the events occurred according to their version.
“It was then that one of my companions took her and lowered her to demand that they help her. The gendarmes made her walk without paying attention to her suffering and let her die without giving her the medical attention that any human being deserves (sic)”, they pointed out.
The family also commented that Mylena sent them audios hours before her death expressing her health situation.
For its part, the Gendarmerie published a statement this Sunday indicating that Mylena, “at the time of presenting health complications, was immediately transferred to an external hospital.”
“She was taken twice to the Penal Hospital, where she received medical attention, due to severe abdominal pain. From this health facility, she was urgently transferred to the Barros Luco Hospital, where she died at 9:00 p.m. yesterday,” they specified.
Meanwhile, deputy Gael Yeomans (CS) presented a letter to the Ministry of Women: “We are going to demand explanations from the corresponding authorities. There is no justification for a woman being in prison, not receiving the right to decent health like any other person. My condolences to Milena’s family for her unfortunate loss.”
In addition, the prosecutor Renzo Razeto ordered proceedings to the Homicide Brigade of the Investigative Police, as specified. CNN Chile.
Similarly, Razeto requested an autopsy from the Legal Medical Service (SML) under the Minnesota Protocol on the Investigation of Potentially Unlawful Deaths.
