Four days after a serious accident in Vienna-Hietzing near the Schönbrunn subway station, a 17-year-old succumbed to his serious injuries in the Meidling trauma center. ORF Vienna reported this on Saturday, citing information from the trauma center. This was initially not available to the APA. His 18-year-old friend continues to fight for his life in the Vienna General Hospital.

The young men were riding on the roof of a U4 train coming from Hütteldorf on Tuesday afternoon and crashed into a pedestrian overpass. A 16-year-old, who was also involved in the daring action, escaped with minor injuries, while a 13-year-old boy remained uninjured. The two Czechs and two Austrians climbed onto the roof of a U4 subway station shortly after 4 p.m. on Tuesday to “surf” on the subway. The two Czechs then hit a pedestrian bridge as they entered Schönbrunn station.

A video of the action circulating on the Internet shows the two men posing for the camera on the roof of the moving train immediately before the accident. The clip ends seconds after the apparent collision with the overpass and shows the two men lying on the roof of the train with massive injuries in the final sequence.

**Interview with Youth Safety Expert ⁤Dr. ⁤Elena Fischer**

**Interviewer:** Thank you for joining⁤ us, Dr. Fischer. ⁢In light of the ⁣tragic accident involving young men participating in ‘train surfing‘ in Vienna, what are your thoughts⁤ on this dangerous trend?

**Dr. Fischer:** Thank you for having me. The ‌incident we’re discussing is profoundly saddening and highlights the extreme risks associated with ‘train surfing.’ It shows how ⁣thrill-seeking behaviors can quickly spiral into ⁤life-threatening situations.

**Interviewer:** The ages of those involved are⁤ quite alarming. Why do‌ you think young people are drawn to activities like train⁢ surfing?

**Dr. Fischer:** ⁣Young people are often driven by a desire for adventure and a sense of invincibility. Peer⁤ pressure plays a significant role ⁢as well; when friends encourage risky behavior, it can lead to disastrous consequences. Unfortunately, ‌the allure of social media⁤ can glamorize these activities, ⁢as they seek validation through likes⁣ and shares.

**Interviewer:** Given the tragic ‌outcome, what measures do you believe should be⁤ taken to prevent⁤ such incidents in the future?

**Dr. Fischer:** Education is crucial. We need to implement awareness programs in schools that detail the dangers of such activities. ‌Additionally, parents should engage in open conversations with‍ their children about risk ⁣assessment. Public transport authorities can⁣ also enhance safety measures, such as increasing⁢ surveillance‍ and ‍imposing stricter ‌penalties for trespassing.

**Interviewer:** What would you say to those‍ who might‍ think that these young ⁣men were simply seeking excitement and freedom?

**Dr. Fischer:**⁢ While it’s natural for youth to seek‍ out thrills, it’s important to balance that desire with an understanding of the consequences. Excitement cannot come at the cost‍ of‌ safety. We need to foster environments where⁢ young people can engage in safe, adventurous activities—like‌ organized sports or climbing—without putting themselves in danger.

**Interviewer:** As a final thought, ⁤what do you think our ⁢readers should take away from this incident?

**Dr. Fischer:** It’s imperative⁤ that we start a community conversation about the responsibilities of‌ youth ‌and the role of adults in guiding them. We must collectively reflect on how ⁤we can create safe⁤ spaces‍ for young people to explore⁣ their boundaries⁤ without jeopardizing their lives.
