In the NDR interview, Rostock’s club boss Robert Marien found clear words for the incidents during the northern duel between St. Pauli and FC Hansa. A steward and a fan were injured. St. Pauli President Oke Göttlich puts point deductions up for discussion as possible future penalties.

Some Hansa supporters massively used pyrotechnics and projectiles in the Millerntor Stadium on Sunday. “Not only red lines were crossed, it was completely in the brain of some people,” Marien told NDR following his team’s 1-0 defeat.

“There were ceramic parts, rockets and firecrackers flying around. The situation was extremely dangerous. We have to apologize for that and can only clearly distance ourselves from it.”

“Today there was violence involved and violence is such a red line that must never be crossed.”

During a stadium inspection on Monday, St. Pauli determined damage in the mid-five-digit range in the guest area. The club wants to charge the Ostsee-Club for the costs. The Hamburgers have also filed a criminal complaint for property damage. “In the area of the guest block, Hansa supporters destroyed sinks in the sanitary facilities, ripped electronics out of the ceiling paneling and tried to set fire,” said the Kiez club.

Göttlich: “Sanction clubs also on a sporting basis”

“These are scenes that have nothing to do with football,” St. Pauli’s President Oke Göttlich told NDR, pointing out that there had been “good discussions” with those responsible at Hansa Rostock in the run-up to the game. “The clubs are trying really hard to make the best possible circumstances and they are always being tricked. People are damaged – that’s not possible.”

“The hospitality has been clearly overstretched. People are deliberately attacked here, that has no place in football.”
Ok divine

Göttlich emphasized that within the German Football League (DFL) one must “certainly talk internally regarding the extent to which the clubs can be sanctioned not only financially – because most people are not interested in that – but also in terms of sport”. “A certain clientele is no longer held responsible in any way. The financial damage no longer functions as a limit.”

The 47-year-old puts point deductions up for discussion as possible future penalties, “when limits are crossed. People have been shot at and injured here, so we can’t keep watching.” The situation has worsened in many stadiums in recent months.

Restart 10 minutes late

FC St. Pauli supporters also set off pyrotechnics during the game on Sunday, but the scenes before the second half in the Hansa fan block are particularly memorable. Massive pyrotechnics were fired, firecrackers flew in and out of the guest block, which, in addition to the danger for fans and stewards, should also result in a severe penalty from the DFB. The game started ten minutes late following the break.

“But I don’t want to put the financial aspects in the foreground,” said Marien. “Today there was violence involved and violence is such a red line that must never be crossed.”

Marien: “They’re just complete idiots”

It was relatively quiet outside the stadium – but these incidents make Marien angry. “I can’t be ashamed of 50 people who just rocked too close to the wall, I distance myself from them. They’re just idiots,” said the Hansa boss. “They have nothing to do with Hansa Rostock.”

The club announced that it would process the incidents and would “take appropriate action if the perpetrator was identified,” as the club wrote in a statement.
