According to authorities, five people were injured in an attack on the western Russian city of Belgorod near the border with Ukraine. Four of them were hospitalized, the region’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said on Telegram on Wednesday. Ukraine, meanwhile, reported that it had been attacked by Russia with 32 drones and eight missiles during the night.

Of these, 28 drones and four missiles were shot down. There is currently no information on any casualties or damage.

According to the governor of Belgorod, a high-rise building and 75 smaller residential buildings were damaged in the large-scale attack. Dozens of vehicles, water and gas pipes were also damaged. Independent observers believe the Ukrainian shelling is Kiev’s response to a Russian air strike on the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv.

According to Gladkov, four other towns in the Belgorod region were also shelled during the night. According to preliminary information, however, only material damage was caused. The Russian city of Belgorod and the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv are only about 70 kilometers apart. Both cities have been badly hit by the war.

Since the beginning of its war of aggression, Russia has also systematically attacked civilian targets in Ukraine. Energy supply facilities in particular are repeatedly the target of Russian drones, rockets and cruise missiles. On the other hand, regions near the Russian border are also complaining about increasing shelling from Ukraine. However, the number of victims and the extent of the damage are disproportionate to the destruction caused by Moscow.
