Injured after hail and ice on the A9 in the Nuremberg region

Several accidents occurred on the A9 on Saturday evening near Hormersdorf in the Nürnberger Land district. This is reported by the police headquarters in Central Franconia. The reason was a heavy hailstorm, which led to a very slippery road. The exact number of injured is currently unclear. The freeway is completely closed in both directions.

The police and THW have set up a diversion at the Schnaittach junction in the direction of Berlin and Hormersdorf in the direction of Munich.

Two major accidents involving many people

Around 6:00 p.m., a driver stopped on the hard shoulder in the direction of Berlin between the Schnaittach and Hormersdorf junctions because of the onset of hail, reports the Central Franconia police headquarters. A tow truck pulled up behind it. Its driver got out and was hit by another passing car – he was resuscitated on site and taken to a hospital by rescue helicopter with life-threatening injuries.

At 6.20 p.m. there was another serious accident on the opposite lane between Hormersdorf and Schnaittach: according to the current state of knowledge, ten vehicles were involved, according to the police. The exact course of the accident is still largely unclear at this point in time, at least seven people are currently assumed to have been injured, one of them seriously injured.

Witnesses bring injured people to clinics

In some cases, witnesses drove the injured directly to nearby hospitals. The exact number of injured is therefore not yet known and, just like the circumstances surrounding the accident, is now the subject of investigations by the traffic police in Feucht. In order to clarify the exact cause of the accident, the police called in experts in both accidents on the orders of the public prosecutor’s office.

The police headquarters in Central Franconia cannot yet say when further investigation results will be available. The A9 motorway was closed in both directions for several hours and reopened late in the evening.
