The State-Owned Tourism Holding, PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia or InJourney is targeting 1.7 million visitors to the Borobudur Temple tourist destination, Central Java, this year. The target was conveyed by InJourney’s Marketing and Tourism Program Director Maya Watono in the signing of a memorandum of understanding with Thai airline, Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (Thai Airways), Monday (19/8).

Maya said that until now the number of visitors to Borobudur Temple has reached 1.4 million people. Of that number, 10% or around 140 thousand people among them are foreign tourists.

“We are targeting 1.7 million visitors to Borobudur Temple by the end of this year,” said Maya in her statement.

The development of interconnectivity with Thai Airways is expected to boost the growth of foreign tourist movement to these tourist destinations.

It is known that the number of Buddhists in Asia is 490 million or around 92% of the number of Buddhists in the world. In Southeast Asia, the largest number of Buddhists comes from Thailand with 64 million people or 53% of the total number of Buddhists in Southeast Asia. This number is considered very potential. That is the background to the opening of air connectivity for Thailand to Borobudur Temple via Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA).

“With this opportunity, we are targeting a five-fold increase in visits from foreign tourists in the future,” explained Maya.

Borobudur Temple, he said, was planned as a pilgrimage or spiritual pilgrim destination for Buddhists. Maya said there was a high enthusiasm of tourists with a special interest in worship.

“For that reason, we are developing connectivity from the air side in collaboration with Thai Airways,” said Maya. (Z-11)
