The new vaccination campaign for 11-14 year olds against human papillomavirus (HPV) infections has recently started in nearly 7,000 French colleges. But, on October 19, the fatal fall of a schoolboy following post-vaccination discomfort forced the Medicines Agency to review its safety recommendations at the time of vaccination. We take stock of the new protocol in force.

An anti-HPV vaccination campaign among middle school students

Certain types of human papillomavirus are involved in the development of cancers including cancer of the cervix, anus, penis, mouth, etc. Therefore, vaccinate adolescents before they start their lives sexual relations helps protect them against these cancers.

It is in this sense that a vaccination campaign for 11-14 year olds against human papillomavirus (HPV) infections recently began in nearly 7,000 French colleges. Targeting 5 year oldseit aims to increase vaccination coverage among French adolescents.

To know ! Free and not compulsory, anti-HPV vaccination is recommended for all boys and girls, aged 11 to 14, according to a two-dose vaccination schedule and an interval of 6 months between the two doses.

Until now, the instructions for anti-HPV vaccination in college recommended monitoring of students within a quarter of an hour following the injection but without specifying in what context. Only students who were unwell had to be laid down.

Anti-HPV vaccination: the ANSM reviews its safety recommendations

But, on October 19, a tragic event forced the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) to review its safety recommendations.. This concerns the fatal fall of a schoolboy from Saint-Herblain following post-vaccination discomfort. Sitting on a chair, he fell backwards on his head after his discomfort. For the Pays de la Loire Regional Health Agency, any link between the vaccine product and the malaise seems to be excluded.

The ANSM has nevertheless chosen to update its post-vaccination surveillance recommendations intended for healthcare professionals. From now on, It will therefore be appropriate to lay adolescents vaccinated against HPV on floor mats or blankets or to have them sit on the floor with their backs against a wall for a period of a quarter of an hour after the injection.. The objective? Avoid any risk of injury knowing that one of the main side effects of the vaccine is the risk of discomfort (syncope sometimes without pre-syncopal symptoms).

Anti-HPV vaccination: reassuring data

The ANSM, however, would like to point out reassuring data. According to the Agency, the safety profile of anti-HPV vaccines is well established and follows more than 15 years of use and more than 300 million doses administered worldwide, including more than 12 million in France.

Furthermore, depending on the jurisdiction, discomfort or brief loss of consciousness remains infrequent and resolves quickly. They may be attributed to a psychogenic reaction to the injection and be accompanied by tremors or stiffness. As for the occurrence of anaphylactic reactions, it remains exceptional and the risk is identical to that of all injectable vaccines. As a precautionary measure, the ANSM recommends always having appropriate medical treatment available and calling 15 if necessary.
