Initiative for more mature women on the radar

Mature women in mature stories – that is the aim of the new script competition set up by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In the third round of the “Heroines in Series” track, treatments can now be submitted until January 28th in which at least one woman over the age of 55 who works in a classic scientific or IT profession has a leading role. The project was presented on Monday.

“I believe that the media as a whole tends to pass on existing role clichés. We all do that,” said Economics Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP), justifying the commitment. This affects both the question of the representation of women in the so-called MINT professions – i.e. mathematics, IT, natural sciences and technology – as well as the visibility of older actresses. According to Kocher, 30,000 vacancies in the MINT sector are currently advertised: “This makes it all the more important to advertise the advantages of a job in the MINT sector.”

Some of the most renowned actresses of the affected generation appear as figureheads for the campaign. “That’s what the grandmas of today look like. That’s how active they are and how much they get involved in society,” Konstanze Breitenebner made clear. “I would be really happy if we might be what we are,” said Susi Stach, describing her hope. Adele Neuhauser is also relying on the initiative to be more realistic: “I have the feeling that we don’t tell enough regarding what is really there.” Because that’s the current situation in the industry and society, Michou Friesz outlined: “I played my first grandmother when I was 41. But since my 50th birthday I’ve muddled through a bit.”

The new call for tenders aims to go some way towards changing this situation. “The positioning and presence of women in the film industry should be consciously strengthened,” said Secretary General Eva Landrichtinger from the Austrian Business Agency (ABA), which, in collaboration with “Let’s change the picture” and the Script Forum, organized the competition on behalf of the ministry handled. Four submissions will be awarded 20,000 euros each and they will be allowed to take part in a mentoring program.
