“Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey into the Desert” – that’s the name of the new film by the grande dame of German feature films, director Margarethe von Trotta. In 1981 she was the first woman to win the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. The reason at the time was, among other things, her film “The Leading Time”, in which von Trotta dealt with the two sisters Christiane and Gudrun Ensslin. One was an editor at the women’s magazine “Emma”, the other a member of the terrorist group RAF. Von Trotta, who was born in Berlin in 1942, has repeatedly focused on the great women of German history in her films, for example in her films regarding Rosa Luxemburg and Hannah Arendt. For the film regarding Ingeborg Bachmann, she spent months in the Austrian National Library in Vienna reading the correspondence between Bachmann and her great love, the Swiss writer Max Frisch, and other original documents. The result is a filmic portrait in which Bachmann is sketched as a radical writer and an uncompromising person who lives and loves.

In conversation with Renata Schmidtkunz, Margarethe von Trotta talks regarding her own style of precise and thoroughly researched approach to her large female figures.
