In Cuba, the food allocated by the ration card, also known as the ration book, is insufficient to ensure that a family is fed for the entire month. However, the allocations of the basic basket of goods are indispensable given the widespread shortages and high prices of food.

In the capital, Havana, priority is given to the distribution of food, which often does not reach the rest of the country. The situation in the other provinces is more complex, as deliveries often take longer and many foodstuffs or hygiene products are not allocated.

The Provincial Trade Company of Havana has published the schedule for food distribution in the city’s grocery stores for the month of August. Below are the products pending distribution for the month of July and those that will be delivered in August:

Pending July distribution

  • Jams: The distribution of 13 boxes for children aged 0 to 2 years, 11 months and 29 days will be completed.
  • Oil: The distribution of 1 pound per consumer corresponding to the months of June and July continues.

Distribution for August

  • Rice: Each consumer will receive 5 pounds.
  • Free rice: An additional 1 kg will be delivered per consumer.
  • Sugar: Each consumer will receive 2 pounds.
  • Beans: 10 ounces will be distributed per consumer.
  • Peas: Distribution of 30 ounces per consumer corresponding to the months of June, July and August has begun.
  • Sal: The distribution corresponding to the third quarter (June, July and August) will begin by core composition.
  • Canned sardines: 2 cans will be given to each person over 65 years of age.

Consumers in Havana hope that this schedule will be punctually met so that they can better plan their diet with the few foods in the standard family basket, in an environment marked by scarcity and economic difficulties.

However, Havana Tribunethe capital newspaper responsible for publishing this information, is not responsible for any changes that may arise in the distribution. For any additional questions, citizens can contact the Provincial Trade Company of Havana at the telephone numbers 7204-7185 (food) and 7204-6980 (non-food).

The ration book remains an essential resource in the daily lives of Cubans, despite its limitations and obsolescence.
