The former US Secretary of State died at the age of 100 at his home in the US state of Connecticut. Kissinger was considered one of the most influential diplomats of the 20th century. As Secretary of State under Presidents Nixon and Ford, he had great influence on world politics, but was also very controversial. In the 1970s he pushed for an easing of relations with the Soviet Union. He also initiated a cautious rapprochement with communist-ruled China. In 1973, Kissinger was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize together with the North Vietnamese chief negotiator for a ceasefire agreement in the Vietnam War. The war continued despite the agreement. After his political career, he remained an influential advisor and wrote numerous books. Just last July, Kissinger traveled to China and met President Xi Jinping there.

Controversial world climate summit started in Dubai
The world climate conference Cop Twenty Ait started in Dubai on Thursday. The fact that the head of an oil company took over the presidency for the summit caused criticism in advance. In addition, fierce wrangling over the financing of the proposals is expected once more. The focus is on the first global agreement on a gradual phase-out of the use of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, which are held responsible for the increase in the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide and thus global warming. Disaster aid for poor countries is also discussed. Delegates from 200 countries already had a proposal on Thursday to set up a fund to deal with the consequences of climate disasters such as floods or droughts. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres calls for solutions.
