The future is becoming clearer on the supermarket shelves. The president of the strategic committee of the E.Leclerc centers, Michel-Édouard Leclerc, anticipated this Friday “pockets of reduction” in the prices of certain products “from February-March”, at the end of the commercial negotiations.
“Our buyers will bring back pockets of obvious decline from February-March,” declared the media ambassador of the leader in food distribution in France on RMC/BFM.

The end of March date corresponds to the outcome of commercial negotiations which are held each year with agro-industrial suppliers of mass distribution to determine the conditions of sale (purchase price, shelf space, promotional calendar, etc.) of the products. sold the rest of the year.
Those for 2024 have been exceptionally brought forward by a few weeks by the government, which thus hopes to observe a more rapid impact on the shelves of reductions in the cost of certain raw materials.
These negotiations will therefore be concluded no later than January 15 for suppliers with a turnover of less than 350 million euros and no later than January 31 for the largest suppliers.
A drop in the price of pasta
“There are prices that will fall, that’s our objective,” declared the boss of Système U on Thursday on RTL.
Boss of the 4th player in the sector (behind E.Leclerc, Carrefour and Intermarché), Dominique Schelcher cited “the price of pasta which will fall”, as well as that of chips, “even if for the moment the suppliers are still asking for rate increases of 5%” on average.
Not a massive drop
Industry representatives, however, warned that massive or widespread price reductions should not be expected, as their costs remained high.
The price increase decreased in intensity, standing for food at +7.7% year-on-year in November, while it was still in double digits a few months earlier.
However, this is because prices had already started to rise significantly a year ago. Furthermore, a slight increase is far from a decrease.
The inflationary crisis is “behind us” in France, but the level of inflation will remain “a little higher” than before the crisis, the Minister of the Economy, Bruno Le Maire, estimated Thursday on Europe 1.
