AVS pensions have long been lagging behind wage developments. But the gap is widening even more due to the strong inflation. As the latter has also jumped in Switzerland, pensioners risk suffering a significant loss of purchasing power.

This is due to the fact that, according to the law, annuities are only adjusted to half the inflation. The increase in wages is also taken into account for half. Normally, this leads to a real increase in pensions. But not in 2022: Since inflation was still low during the 2021 wage negotiations, wage agreements were below 1%. This pulls the calculation of pensions down. The increase for 2023 will therefore be significantly lower than the inflation.
