Top executives were little affected by inflation last year. According to a survey by Oxfam, people in top positions received a pay rise in 2022.
In India, the United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa, the highest-paid drivers received the most. Their salary rose by no less than 9 percent, while the wages of ‘ordinary’ employees fell by 3 percent.
Inflation was very high last year, which also caused the prices of groceries, for example, to rise. The wages of many workers did not rise as fast. As a result, one billion employees worldwide worked an average of six days ‘for free’. Since wages lagged behind, they earned an average of 623 euros less due to the high inflation.
In the Netherlands, people even worked ‘for free’ for regarding eleven days. As a result, employees lost an average of 2,791 euros last year.
“While directors tell us to keep wages low, they are giving themselves and their shareholders huge payouts,” said Amitabh Behar, executive director of Oxfam International on an interim basis.
“Most people are working longer for less and can’t keep up with the cost of living. Years of austerity and attacks on unions have widened the gap between the wealthiest and the rest of us.”
In addition, women and girls are still paid less than men for the same work. Women also spent at least 380 billion hours a month on unpaid work. As a result, they work less at their paid work or even have to stop because care tasks take up too much time.
