– Coop lowers prices on 800 products
Food prices are rising. Nevertheless, various retailers are announcing price reductions.
Multivitamin juice minus 16.7 percent, sunflower oil minus 3.6 percent or rocket salad minus 7.8 percent: the retailer announces price reductions in the current “Coop-Zeitung”. According to the company’s own information, 800 products have become cheaper since January.
Coop is not alone with his announcement. Other retailers are also using the time when inflation is affecting all areas of daily life to announce price reductions. While the prices for rent, electricity and health insurance premiums are rising sharply, shopping in the supermarket should at least remain affordable, according to the supposed message.
At the end of August, Lidl Switzerland reported that it had reduced prices on 339 products since the beginning of the year. Further reductions would follow, writes the online portal for consumer topics, “Konsider”. The Migros discounter Denner also made 300 products cheaper. This corresponds to 15 percent of the store range. And Migros itself stated in July that “many” of the around 700 products from the affordable own brand M-Budget had reached the 2022 prices once more.
Inflation is falling in Switzerland
Energy prices have risen since last year due to the war in Ukraine. Fertilizers and animal feed became scarce, and prices for raw materials such as grain also rose sharply. This development also led, among other things, to rising food prices, as retailers had to pass on the additional costs to their customers.
Other factors also cause food in the store to become more expensive. For example, the world market price for orange juice concentrate has been rising for months. Hurricanes and a plant disease severely affected the orange harvest in the US state of Florida, among other places. Consumers in Switzerland are now feeling the first effects Sunday newspaper already wrote: Organic oranges are missing at Alnatura, and Andros fruit juice is more expensive at the Coop. A small bottle now costs 2.40 instead of 2.30 francs.
Inflation in Switzerland is slowly falling and was 1.6 percent in August. However, according to the Federal Statistical Office, food prices have already risen by 5.7 percent in the current year alone. With the price reductions, the retailers probably want to keep a promise. The bosses of Coop and Migros had announced stable or falling prices for this year and the peak of inflation had been overcome.
