Due to l’inflation, the budget of the French is becoming increasingly tight. As proof, the weight of constrained spending has soared in recent months, according to the latest barometer conducted by CSA Research for LesFurets, made public this Saturday. It reaches the sum of 1195 euros per month on average, or 38% of the average net monthly income of households.

This is a new record since the creation of this barometer in 2020, underlines LesFurets. Compared to the previous edition of this index, dating from October 2022, the increase reached 100 euros per month, or +9%. “+9% in six months, this is clearly unheard of», reports to the Parisian Cédric Ménager, managing director of the comparator.

A leap to put on the account of the explosion of three expenditure items in particular: energy, transport and insurance. With the rise, although limited to 15%, electricity and gas prices at the start of the year, the average monthly budget of the French for the first rose from 97 to 103 euros, and for the second from 97 to 110 euros. On the transport side, the French wallet is suffering from rising fuel prices, spending at the pump going from 123 to 132 euros per month. Note that the study was carried out last March, before the decline in prices at service stations.

Same observation for users of public transport: expenses relating to fixed prices have increased from 49 to 58 euros per month. In Île-de-France for example, the increase of the Navigo pass in January has been there… Finally, “the various insurance contracts are also subject to inflation“, points out LesFurets. Car insurance has gone from 86 to 91 euros per month, for example, mutual health insurance from 98 to 104 euros and home insurance from 61 to 70 euros.

One in two French people manages to save

It is logically the working categories that see the weight of their constrained spending increase the most. Among the poorest French people, i.e. those whose net monthly income is less than 900 euros, it represents 86%, or 1141 euros per month, compared to 80% in October 2022 (1017 euros). A share that drops to 63% among the modest categories, between 35 and 47% among the middle classes and even 21% among high incomes.

Another overdue category, couples with two children, points out the comparator LesFurets. Their constrained expenses have increased sharply over the last six months, rising from 1,595 euros monthly to 1,728 euros, or 44% of their budget. The increase in expenditure related to financial services, communication or even health explains this surge.

By geographical area, the inhabitants of Île-de-France remain those with the highest constrained expenses (1306 euros per month), “mainly due to housing and public transport expenses“, notes the study. But in terms of relative weight, it is the region where these expenses represent the least in the budget (33%). Normandy (44%), Centre-Val de Loire (43%) and Grand Est (42%) making up the top three.

As a result, although we observed a historic increase in booklet A collection in the first quarter (nearly 20 billion euros), only one in two French people (52%) say they manage to put money aside. Three out of ten French people (29%) report that they are just making ends meet, while 19% say they are drawing on their reserves or going into debt. The fight once morest inflation, at the top of the government’s priority pileseems more than ever a necessity.
