Inferno of Passion Meets Nordic Storm: Spain and Denmark Clash in Nations League Firestorm

The Spanish team under national coach Luis de La Fuente is in excellent form. Last summer in Germany, the team won the European Championship with flying colors. After winning the Nations League in 2023, the European Championship was also a prey for La Roja. With the help of young wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams, Spain managed to win the tournament by beating England in the final (2-1).

Since the European Championship, Spain has played two matches. They immediately dropped points in the first, when La Roja visited Serbia did not get further than a 0-0 draw. This slip was immediately corrected by the Spaniards in the following match. Despite a red card for Robin Le Normand, Switzerland was not strong enough at home to make a stand against Spain, the match ultimately ended in a 1-4 victory for La Roja.

Denmark had a fairly disappointing European Championship. The group drew three times against Slovenia (1-1), England (1-1) and Serbia (0-0). With these results, the Danes qualify for the next round as one of the best numbers three. However, host country Germany proved too strong in the quarter-finals with a 2-0 win. After the defeat against Germany, Kasper Hjulmand took over as national coach after four years of employment.

Kasper Hjulmand’s successor is Lars Knudsen. The Dane has been appointed as interim manager and is doing very well so far. The Danes both managed to win matches in the Nations League. The team won 2-0 against both Switzerland and Serbia in its own Parken stadium in Copenhagen.

De La Fuente has been forced to adjust his team for the upcoming matches. A number of basic players are not available for this international match. Rodri and Carvajal were already injured and opted out, and Nico Williams has now also opted out. The Athletic Bilbao star already reported to the training camp injured and has made the choice to return to Bilbao due to too much trouble. Williams is already the third winger who is unavailable, Ferran Torres and Bryan Gil were also injured. So De La Fuente has little choice at the front.

Knudsen has the luxury of having a fully fit selection at his disposal for the upcoming international matches.

In total, both countries played twelve official matches against each other. Spain clearly has the upper hand in this. La Roja won nine of these twelve meetings, twice the match ended and once the Danes came out on top. The last time these teams met in official matches was during the qualification for the 2008 European Championship. Spain was too strong in both matches, 2-1 and 1-3.
