Infectious disease doctor: “Coronavirus continues to mutate, and it is still a serious disease”

The head of WHO this week expressed confidence in the end of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2023. However, the coronavirus continues to pose a threat. Snezhana Sleptsova, chief freelance infectious disease specialist of the Ministry of Health of Yakutia, reported this in a commentary to YSIA.

“The end of the coronavirus pandemic will not mean that the virus will say goodbye to us forever. SARS-CoV-2 continues to mutate, and it is not known how the same types of omicron strain will behave in the future. Therefore, it is impossible to write off the infection. This is still a serious disease that entails various complications, primarily for risk groups – people with chronic diseases and the elderly over 65 years old, ”said Snezhana Sleptsova.

Among the complications that most often occur following coronavirus, experts call disorders of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Therefore, it is important to undergo a medical examination following an illness.

According to the chief freelance infectious disease specialist of the Ministry of Health of Yakutia, today we can say that COVID-19 is moving into the category of SARS. The current increase in cases is primarily associated with a seasonal rise in the incidence of respiratory infections.

“They usually peak in March, we expect a decline by mid-April,” Sleptsova said.

Recall that the last two weeks in the republic there has been an increase in cases of coronavirus. Over the past day, 143 people have been diagnosed with it.
