Vaccination of children under one year old against meningococci A, B, W and Y – as well as C – will be compulsory from next year, as recommended by the High Authority for Health. Currently, only anti-meningococcal C vaccination is obligatory for children under one year of age; vaccination against B is only recommended.
Meningitis are particularly serious infections of the brain and spinal cord. They are fatal one time in ten and, the rest of the time, often cause significant neurological sequelae.
Raising awareness during the Olympics
They are most often caused by a virus, but also sometimes by bacteria, called meningococci. Faced with these, vaccination is possible, but it is complicated by the existence of many different groups of meningococci.
The French pharmaceutical laboratory Sanofi, manufacturer of vaccines against meningitis and sponsor of the Olympic Games, is leading an awareness campaign for vaccination against meningitis as part of this event, supported by three para-athletes affected by the disease.
